Interesting post by Kevin. I hope he's right. But maybe the cycles he's talking about are minicycles in larger cycles. That is, we've been in a series of recent cycles that have incrementally increased the "liberal" nature of society. But is there a larger cycle, along the same lines but with greater effect, that could indicate a greater downturn to rightwing lines? I don't know. Technology today gives anyone in power the potential to take totalitarianism to virtually unchallenged heights. The more society depends on tech, the more vulnerable it is to this. And aWol knows it.
I heard an interview on NPR this morning about a book written by Perle & some other guy. Didn't catch the first part which is why I don't have the names. It was a pretty fawning interview along regular neocon lines: withdraw from the UN, national ID cards, revoking citizenship, non judicial detentions, etc. But near the end of the interview, both authors were asked what one policy they thought was most important to implement.
Perle wanted the re-organization of the intelligence community to better reflect his views, no surprize. But the other guy (and I'm sorry I didn't catch his name, try
npr) gave the game away. He stated that the primary goal was to re-elect aWol. Only then can they advance their agenda.
At least honesty slips out occasionally.

Maybe they were just tired of their open ended deployment. Yee faces court martial for porn and adultery, while these folks are just kicked out or allowed to resign.

aWol & the military
Yes, aWol has a majority or plurality on most questions, but not by all that much. Outside of corporate execs & the Torquemadas on the WSJ editorial board, these folks ought to be his biggest supporters, according to aWol dogma, anyway.

My Way News
"It was not immediately clear why Ashcroft made the decision."
Maybe because they found out who did the dirty deed, and John Boy wants to get out of the way?

31. President Bush claimed that the US had to invade Iraq because Iraq had nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. None has been found. Do you think that misleading the U.S. public and Congress in order to take the country into war is grounds for impeachment?

Yes (39.9%), No (42.5%), Don't Know (17.6%).

Then:

Removing a president from office starts with a House of Representatives vote on whether to bring the president to trial before the Senate - impeachment. Next, the Senate must vote on whether to remove the president. What would you want your member of the House of Representatives to do?
Total Likely voters
34 41 Vote in favor of impeaching Clinton and send the case to the Senate for trial
62 55 Vote against impeachment of Clinton
4 4 No opinion

Kevin Drum has an interesting idea. I'd say add healthcare to the same formula. Too many of those in Washington who claim $150K+ annual salary with taxpayer financed health care is inadequate see no problem with families and individuals trying to survive on $25k or less, with no or vanishing health care.
